Fred painted both realistically as well as abstractly. His primary influence was the New York Abstract Expressionist school of painting. Primarily self-taught, he received drawing and sculpture lessons as a child in Europe, and took painting classes at the Art Students League in New York, North Carolina Central University in Durham, the Durham Arts Council and the Arts Center in Carrboro.

In addition to being an artist, Fred founded and operated a publishing and training organization, New View Publications, with his wife, Perry, teaching the applications of the scientific theory of human behavior known as Perceptual Control Theory. Fred served as the President of the Control Systems Group, a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching Perceptual Control Theory worldwide.
Fred is the former Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Art Center in Carrboro (1990-96), has been Treasurer of the NC Watercolor Society (1985-87) and President of Center Gallery in Carrboro (1987-88). Fred lives in Chapel Hill, NC.
